'A Court of Mist and Fury' Review
I don’t even know what to say to adequately express how much my freaking soul loves this book! Unlike the first book, this one met and exceeded my expectations. I get it now. I get why everyone who reads this book becomes obsessed with this series. Yes, it’s that good!
Characters
Feyre: This book was her time to shine and she took the opportunity to do just that. Everything that happened at the end of the first book left her broken and a shell of a person. My heart hurt for her. But then she finally finds herself again and is a strong heroine that you can really root for!
Rhysand: Is there a way to describe this beautiful fictional man that will do him justice? I doubt it, but I’m going to try anyway. This character made me an emotional mess. He was a bad boy, a powerful dark lord, arrogant, smart, selfless, strong, sexy, kind, ugh just all of it. His past gave him a sense of sadness and true selflessness. Why isn’t he real? Why? Why? Why?
Tamlin: Dude might have been gorgeous but by the end of the first book I had little hope in ever liking him again. That feeling continued and changed into an incredibly strong dislike. He was controlling and angry and absolutely not what Feyre needed. Instead of validating and helping her through her issues, he ignored and trapped her. I truly believe he loved her, but not the healthy kind of love she needed.
Lucien: I’ve liked him since day one, and that didn’t change much in this book. It is obvious he has conflicting emotions about what happened at the Spring Court, but is blinded by his loyalty to Tamlin. He neglects Feyre when she needs him most.
Rhysand’s Inner Circle: All I want to say is that I love them all! They accept Feyre and give her the family she has been truly missing. They fight like family and love like family. They are hilarious and wonderful.
Plot
My eyes could not travel across the page fast enough. The start of my obsession with this book was when Rhysand crashed Feyre’s wedding and took her back to the night court! I’d had enough of Tamlin and couldn’t for the life of me get enough of Rhysand and Velaris. It was the complete opposite of the Spring Court and made me truly upset I don’t live there. The descriptions of Velaris were breathtakingly beautiful. It made the backdrop of Feyre and Rhysand’s budding romance magical.
Feyre starts training and learning how to manage all of the power she acquired from the seven high lord’s all while the King of Hybern is making moves to take over everything. I think this book was more of a journey of healing and love for Feyre than it was action and war (though there was that too). The last few chapters left me breathless and manic as everything unraveled.
Feyre feigns Rhys’ control over her, claiming lingering love for Tamlin. She tells the king to break the bond and returns to the spring court. Then we learn that Feyre was sworn in as High Lady of the night court and is now Rhys equal in every way. I actually gasped when I read this part and was so dang excited to now have Feyre as a spy in the spring court!
The Romance
Rhysand and Feyre are mates and the journey she takes through the book of realizing and accepting that made my heart race and pound. It was hot, steamy, romantic, and just plain glorious! The scenes at the court of nightmares, the crapped room at the inn, and then the cabin when she accepts him as her mate were just chefs kiss. It sent lightning through Feyre and it sent lightning through me!
“His words were a lethal caress as he said, ‘Did you enjoy the sight of me kneeling before you?‘” Why Yes Rhys…I absolutely did!
As much as I appreciated the steamy scenes, my heart actually shattered and melted at the end of the book when the bond is broken and Feyre is taken back to the spring court. Good thing this was all a farce because had the mating bond actually been broken I would have tracked down Sarah J Maas to chuck this book in her face.
Final Thoughts
I am utterly speechless and in a complete state of shock. A Court of Mist and Fury was absolute perfection and I love it so much it’s almost hard to put into coherent words. Was the main reason this book destroyed me emotionally because I love Feyre and Rhysand? Yes.
If this book had no other plot line but those two, I still would have fan-girled hard. Luckily the plot did involve more than romance and I am thanking the lucky stars that I got into this series so late. The moment I finished this book I opened A Court of Wings and Ruin and continued to be emotionally destroyed! I wish I could read this book for the first time every time I pick it up to read. I don’t think there is another book that did so much to my heart as this one. SO FREAKING GOOD!!!
