'A Court of Wings and Ruin' Review

From my review of A Court of Mist and Fury you can probably tell how much I adored that book. It was absolutely fantastic, but here’s the thing, A Court of Wings and Ruin topped it. I may be in the minority of people who think this, but it was my favorite book of the series. I thought this book had the most interesting plot of the series and I actually shed tears at the end of it.

This is a story about knowing who you are, what you deserve, and what is worth fighting for. A Court of Mist and Fury is about finding love. A Court of Wings and Ruin is about deep, unfailing love. The two books together navigate that beautiful journey!

Summary

Feyre has infiltrated the Spring Court, aiming to uncover information on Tamlin and the invading king who threatens to devastate her world. In this dangerous environment, a single mistake could spell disaster not just for Feyre, but for all she cherishes.

As impending war looms, Feyre must navigate her role among the elite High Fae, honing her magical and political skills while balancing the needs of her court and loved ones. Alongside Rhysand, she faces the challenge of discerning allies from enemies among the devious High Lords, seeking support in unlikely places. The survival of Feyre’s realm hangs in the balance, with powerful forces vying for a weapon that could obliterate it.

Characters

Inner Circle: we get to know all of these characters on a deeper level. We get more of their backstory and it made me love them more. Especially Azriel and Cassian.

High Lords: in an effort to build an army against the King of Hybern, members of the night court try to unite the other high lords. We get to know some really cool characters in these scenes. Tarquin was a personal favorite and of course Helion!

Tamlin: It doesn’t really make me like him, but I will admit that I do have respect for what he did for Feyre and Rhys. Instead of dwelling on the anger and hate, he decided to do the right thing. About freaking time!

Feyre and Rhys: They may be one of my favorite book couples. Seeing their relationship deepen and the sacrifices they made for each other made me swoon.

Plot

The book starts off with Feyre’s Infiltration of the Spring Court. I was 100% invested in this. Stupid, petty, dumb Tam Tam had it coming. Feyre uses Tamlin’s guilt and love to her advantage. She creates tension between those who are loyal to him, especially Lucien. By the time she leaves to go back to the night court she has turned his court against him, weakened his military strength, and gathered valuable information. Doing this was a testament to Feyre’s growth as a character. She is no longer a victim, but a powerful woman using her newfound abilities to protect those she loves.

Once she returns to the night court the preparation for war begins. It is a lot of training, war camps, planning with other high lords, and trying to get the cauldron. Feyre’s sisters are learning to cope with being fae and honestly not doing well with it. Elain is boring and Nesta is a character that makes me wish she would just be shot with an ash arrow. She is unbearable and I am not a fan.

Once we get to the war things get crazy. This part was incredibly well written. Dark creatures like the Weaver, Bone Carver, and even the Suriel played key roles in the fight. Amren was incredible and of course Rhysand. I was not happy that this stud of a man felt like sacrificing himself again. That part made my heart ache. But for some reason the part that brought me to tears was papa Archeron. He was off doing who knows what for most of the book, but when he sailed in with the ships named after his daughters then sacrificed himself for them…freaking waterfall from my eyes.

Final Thoughts

If I had one nitpicky thing to say about A Court of Wings and Ruin it would be that there was so much packed into the last half of the book. I almost wish that it was spread out a little more because my heart was breaking over and over with everything happening at the same time. Prepare yourself. This incredible book will make you feel. You will smile. You will cry. You will laugh. The book is not perfect, but the story will stay with you long after you’re done reading it. And that is better than perfection.
