Lucy Foley Novels
The first book I read by Lucy Foley was The Guest List. It was a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick and I had high hopes that I was going to find another auto read thriller author. I accidentally read a spoiler before I finished the book and thought maybe that’s why I didn’t like it much. So I gave Foley another shot and read The Paris Apartment and The Hunting Party. Again, I just wasn’t totally impressed. I took a break and apparently needed to learn again that I just don’t connect well with her writing because I just finished her new book The Midnight Feast and it solidified the fact that this author is not one I enjoy reading.
On a positive note, this author does one thing extremely well and that is creating a setting that is as beautiful as it is deadly. Her stories are usually set in nature surrounded by extreme conditions. The Hunting Party is at a secluded resort in the middle of winter. The Guest List was on an island off the coast of Ireland during a particularly bad storm. You get the idea.
While I’m not particularly blown away by the stories or the twists along the way, Lucy Foley does write books that are easy to read and entertaining. If you’re thinking about picking up one of her books, here are my rankings from most enjoyed to least favorite.
1. The Guest List
A wedding celebration that turns dark and deadly. Off the coast of Ireland guests are invited to celebrate the happy couple. Then someone turns up dead. Who didn’t want to wish the happy couple well? And most importantly, why?
2. The Hunting Party
A group of old college friends welcome in the new year at a hunting lodge on an isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands. Now one of them is dead, and another of them did it. Keep your friends close…but how close is too close?
3. The Midnight Feast
Under the midsummer sun guests gather to celebrate the opening night of The Manor, an upscale, resort style destination. But darkness gathers around an ancient forest that is harboring secrets from the past. It began with a secret fifteen years ago, and now that the past has crashed the party, it will end in murder.
4. The Paris Apartment
A locked room mystery set in a boujee apartment in Paris. Someone is missing, everyone is a suspect, and they all have something to hide.
*This is the only book I would absolutely recommend skipping. In my opinion it is just not worth your time! If you want one with similar vibes check out Lock Every Door by Riley Sager.
